About the Marshall 1974X Handwired Combo Guitar Amplifier (18 Watts, 1x12 in.)
The Marshall 1974X is a handwired reissue of the classic, late '60s guitar amp. The original versions of this 18 watt amp (made from 1966–1968) are now extremely rare and highly sought after.

I´m playing electric guitar since 1972.
I have owned 9 different Marshall amps through the years from 1987 made in 1969 to a 1984 JCM800 2x2 combo. Usualy the Marshall amps are very solid. Not the 1974X. After 3 month of owning this amp it began to blow the main fuse. It seems to be a faulty design. An EL84 can handle up to 300V, but the outputsection of the 1974X works with little more than 400V. (We mesured 406V).
Ironicaly it doesn´t blow the tubes but the outputtransformer, which has happened a few days ago. The problem with the outputtrannie is well known by 1974 users, but a few have also problems with blown powertrannie. The sound of this amp is superior if it works. But such a poor construction in this price range is unacceptable. |
